  • Here’s a simple and friendly guide to taking care of it!

    • Keep your system in tip-top condition by scheduling regular servicing and pump-outs.

    • Clean your irrigation filter every two weeks if applicable.

    • Have your system serviced regularly (every 3 months for homes and most businesses).

    • Schedule pump-outs regularly (typically every 3 years for homes, with business pump-out schedules varying).

    • Be mindful of the amount of cleaning products you use. Opt for cleaning products that are labeled as ‘biodegradable’ or ‘septic-safe’.

    • Choose low-phosphorus or phosphorus-free detergents, as phosphorus can pollute water systems and promote harmful algal blooms.

    • Where possible, use natural or alternative cleaners like bicarbonate of soda, pure soap, borax, vinegar, lemon juice, or cloudy ammonia.

    • Select biodegradable toilet paper to reduce environmental impact.

    • Reduce water usage whenever you can. Avoid overloading the system with sudden large amounts of wastewater (e.g. hosting a large house party or running multiple loads of laundry in quick succession.

  • What You Should Avoid Putting into Your Septic Tank:

    1. Harsh chemicals and cleaners – Avoid bleach, ammonia, drain cleaners, solvents, and other harsh chemicals. They can kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank.

    2. Grease and oils – Fats and oils can clog your system and form solid layers that are hard to break down.

    3. Non-biodegradable products – Wipes (even “flushable” wipes), sanitary products, diapers, cotton balls, and other non-biodegradable materials can cause blockages.

    4. Paint and solvents – Never pour paints, varnishes, or solvents into your septic system, as they can poison the bacteria.

    5. Pharmaceuticals – Pills, liquid medications, or any kind of drugs shouldn’t be flushed, as they can pollute the groundwater.

    6. Excessive paper or paper towels – Even if it seems harmless, too much paper (including paper towels) can overwhelm the system.

    7. Pesticides and herbicides – These can harm both the environment and the septic system’s bacteria.

  • Important reasons why your wastewater treatment plant needs regular servicing:

    • All wastewater treatment systems are expensive assets. Regular servicing helps to protect this asset and reduce the severity of system faults and the cost of repairs.

    • Regular servicing helps to protect the health of you, your family, your work team and the local waterways.

    • It is a requirement of state and local government authorities that all AWTS (Aerated Wastewater Treatment System) are serviced quarterly by an accredited service technician.
